When you’re in a social setting, how do you answer the simple questions of “What do you do?”
Do you say “I am an Estate Planning Attorney”….or whatever your practice specialty is.
We’ll, if that’s what you say, you’ve failed miserably in answering the question….and probably lost any chance to engage the other person in any meaningful conversation.
So, what should you say?
Try something like this the next time –
“I’m an Estate Planning Attorney. I help clients who want to plan for their future.”
Or
“I’m an Estate Planning Attorney. I work with clients who want to protect their assets, property and wealth.”
Or
“I’m an Estate Planning Attorney. I’m like a coach. I specialize in helping clients get prepared for their golden years.”
It really doesn’t matter how you say it….just don’t say what you are – say what you do.
What you’ll find is that more than 90% of the time, this type of answer will lead the other person to ask “How do you do that?” and opens the door for a dialogue.
And by the way, if you start your website content this way, guess what happens.
More than 90+% of your website visitors (your potential clients) will do the same thing – they’ll ask “How do you do that?”
And they’ll naturally keep reading your content….hopefully finding the answer to that question.
Get rid of the pompous and boring content most law firms use….and keep potential clients on your site…..instead of hitting the back-button on their browser.
Give your potential clients the information they want in a way they’re used to getting it….and it’s much more likely that they’ll pick up the phone or e-mail you.
Thanks to Drayton Bird for reminding me of this simple technique.

Right on. I always tell attorneys that every word they write should always focus on telling potential clients how what they do and why what they do will work for them. Writing about how many years they have practiced, where they went to school, and what awards they have one, really provides nothing to potential clients.
